NRA Pistol Instructor

Prequalification Requirements as of April 2017.

All Pistol Instructor Candidates must complete the e-learning portion of The Basics of Pistol Shooting, Blended course. You do not have to complete the Instructor led portion of THIS course.

All Pistol Instructor Candidates must complete the entire Basics of Pistol Shooting course, Instructor Led. Training (ILT). We offer this course each month, see our schedule for availability.

All Pistol Instructor Candidates must complete and return the appendix 1 questionnaire.

All Pistol Instructor Candidates must complete "Appendix 5" prior to or during the Pistol Instructor Course..

To complete the e-learning portion of The Basics of Pistol Shooting course, sign up for the Pistol Instructor Course of your choice. You will receive a confirmation email from your Training Counselor with instructions to mail your deposit with a completed "Appexdix 1" form, which will be attached. Once we receive your deposit and completed Appendix 1, we will purchase and send you a Course Control Code (CCC) that allows you to log in and complete.the e-learning portion. This course will require between 6 - 8 hours to complete; however, you do not have to complete it in one sitting. You may log on and complete the course in +/- 20 minute segments. You must score a minimum of 90% to complete.

To complete the Basics of Pistol Shooting Course, ILT you must attend and pass the 8 hour course. It is preferred that you attend with the Training Counselor(s) that will administer the Pistol Instructor Class. You may take the course from any NRA Certified Instructor, however if you take it with the Academy of Personal Defense & Security you will be offered a chance to complete the shooting qualification required in Appendix 5. To pass this course, you must score a minimum score of 90% on the written test and successfully complete the shooting qualification of "Red" (4 inch groups at 10 feet).

The required Pre-Qualification (Appendix 5) will be scheduled either on an afternoon the week prior to the Pistol Instructor course, or the morning of the first day of class. Contact us to schedule as you prefer.  Please review the requirements of Appendix 5 and bring your pistol of any caliber and 50 rounds of ammunition for the shooting qualification.

Pistol Instructor:

Day one: NRA Certified Pistol Instructor consists of completing Appendix 5 (unless completed prior), and Basic Instructor Training (BIT). BIT is a 6 hour course that covers the instructional method, rules and regulations concerning NRA courses, and an introduction to the portal account. A passing score of 90% is required. NOTE: If you are already certified in another discipline i.e. Shotgun Instructor, or Rifle Instructor, and received that certification within the last 24 months, you may opt out of this portion of the course. There is a cost savings of $75.00 when your BIT is current. Please notify us of your BIT status.

Day two: Consists of the pistol instructor discipline. This is a 10 hour course; however, it is objective based. All objectives must be met before we conclude the course. This course teaches instructional methods for teaching beginning pistol students and teaches the method to be used when conducting the Basics of Pistol Shooting, Instructor Led Training and the Instructor Led Portion of the Blended version of the Basics of Pistol Shooting Course. Certification for the NRA Marksmanship Simulator Training course and Gun safety seminar are included. Demonstration of Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude to effectively teach and a minimum score of 90% on the written exam is required for certification.
